Told this before in here about how he used to pop into our bookies in Stepney green (where our lot used to meet up before an home game) on Saturday dinner time.
A car would pull up and he’d come in there and back the dogs. We’d all start singing his name etc. but he was just so humble and down to earth. He’d just give a smile.
Then he’d jump back in the motor (capri i think) and fuck off lively to the ground and then run rings round the other team.
Think he ended up owning greyhounds.
Talk about a world away!
Great player.

A bloke I worked with played under Devonshire for a couple of non league sides that he managed.
My colleague was a prolific striker at his level and an exceptionally modest humble bloke who most people at work had no idea of what he did.
I only got to know this when I saw him reading a non league newspaper and asked him who he supported....
I loved Devonshire as kid. He was fucking class.

Devonshires Maidenhead side are one of only a few that remain part time in the national league having gained promotion a couple of seasons back.
They are indeed strong and physical but so are many other sides at that level as it seems to be the most effective way to play
.
Saw them play in the cup at Wealdstone earlier in the season and was impressed.
Have been struggling in the league this season but had previously been holding there own since being promoted which is a testament to the man..
One of my fondest memories is his performance after coming on as a sub against Wimbledon in the league cup in 89.
He was a class apart and to be frank the dirty tricks brigade had no right to share a pitch with the man.
Such a cool head and great silky skills even in the twilight of his career.

Think he ended up at Leicester for a little while as well, in between Spain.
He’ll be well remembered in that west brom team that beat the Mancs in the cup at OT when he scored and then big cyrille finished off a great move to score a corker.

He got a severe knee injury in training while at Real Madrid. Rumour has it he was taking the piss out of one of his teammates who probably had a problem with him being black.
I think there is a lot of truth in the rumour...judging by numerous past recollections in the Spanish sports press...

Yeah, but I guess you can still try to play football the right way that's pleasing on the eye.
I'm only taking his word for it, but the way he went on he was describing him as the Tony Pulis of the National League.

Doesn't look anything like his younger version. If I had seen that video and been told it was an ex West Ham player, I couldn't have guessed it was Dev.

Funnily enough, I was chatting to a Maidenhead United supporter the other day about him.
I was quite surprised that he wanted him gone, and even more surprised to hear that he wasn't complementary at all about the style of football he plays there. Said it was the complete opposite to how he played as a player.
I liked DEVO.

My first match in September 82, 5-0 against Birmingham. I'd never seen West Ham over 90 minutes and yep he was the man of the match, never lost the ball and made it look so easy.
But did Bobby Robson really want to build the England team around him? Not sure, I think he was the type of boss who flattered everyone. I remember a lot of names in the midfield coming and going in every game.

Remember when he first came along that me and my mates used to joke he will be the best West Ham player to never score a goal. At least he put that right but he definitely wasn't the best finisher around. Shame in a way because he had everything else.
A truly wonderful box to box player. The best I have ever seen in a West Ham shirt.

Should have bought him.
Devonshire, Brooking, Cunningham and a tackler.

For me, Devo was up there as one of the best but Trevor Brooking was magic and my all time no one.
I never saw Booby Moore play for us, only for Fulham in the 75 final. Had I been a few years older perhaps it would have been Bobby Moore
None of that matters, if he was the best player you remember enough said and thanks for the clip

Noticed in the Dev film he talks about Lyall having a clean out of time wasters and half hearted types are the 1978 relegation.
Quite a lot left after that season and the next when we stayed in the second Division.
Curbishley was one.
